Made the short trip out to the California Living Museum today to check out the new bobcat and mountain lion exhibit. Currently there are three bobcats and one mountain lion on display (separate enclosures) for everyone to see. A really great experience and a great job by CALM to build an exhibit that allows visitors to really get up close and see these amazing animals. CALM is located at 10500 Alfred Harrell Hwy  and is open daily 9 a.m to 4 p.m.

The California Living Museum exists to display and interpret native California animals, plants, fossils and artifacts to teach a respect for all living things through education, recreation, conservation and research. Located on 14 acres, CALM's zoo features over 80 species of medically unreleasable animals. Only animals injured or who cannot survive in their native environment are housed at CALM. Natural exhibits include: an open black bear exhibit, bird of prey exhibit with hawks, owls and eagles, a mammal round that houses bobcats, and several species of foxes, a waterfowl pond with resident mallards attracts spring and fall migrants, deer yard, an underground reptile house, and a contact area with domestic animals. Several endangered species may be seen on exhibit.

State Highway 178 remains closed. The closure limits travel between Lake Isabella and Kernville to Bakersfield. Cal-Trans will continue to remove rocks from the roadway. There is no set date for reopening, but we'll keep you informed.

Those looking for alternate routes to Bakersfield can use Highway 58 and Highway 155/Granite Road. Please monitor road conditions for these routes during winter weather situations.

A quick note to let you know there are roads and highways still impacted by the rainstorms. Please visit the CVB's road condition page to find out more information.

Arguably the most notable road closure is Highway 178 from Bakersfield to Lake Isabella. Cal-Trans estimates the highway will be closed for at least one week in order to remove large boulders from multiple rock slides.

If you're in town tonight head down to Metro Galleries and enjoy First Friday. The monthly event includes sidewalk vendors, businesses open late and of course all the great restuarants in downtown Bakersfield. The heart of the events take place near 19th and Eye Streets.

Check it out tonight from 5 to 9 p.m.

Had a nice lunch at the Renegade Room at Bakersfield College. If you're in town on a Wednesday, you may want to drive up to the college and grab a bite to eat. The restaurant is operated by the students enrolled in the Foods and Nutrition Program. They also serve dinner two nights a week. Check the menu before going, as it changes regularly - also make a reservation - the place fills up quick. bc logo
